Ayaz

अयाज़
also written: Ayaaz
Meaning

Ayaz, the beloved slave of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni, emblem of the devoted beloved.

Usage & notes

In Iqbal's symbolism Ayaz is the beloved in whose curling locks the king's heart was caught; the fading of the twist in Ayaz's zulf marks the passing of an era when love overrode all hierarchy.
