Mizhgaan

The eyelashes (collectively).

Literally: Plural/collective of mizha, the eyelash.

Mizhgaan are the beloved's eyelashes — in the ghazal's armory, the row of arrows or fine daggers fringing the deadly eye. Each lash is a shaft loosed at the lover's heart; to be wounded by the mizhgaan is one of love's chosen martyrdoms. The image gathers the eye's whole power to slay into the delicate fringe that frames it, beauty edged like a blade.
