Urdu · noun · Nature & the Garden

Os

ओस
said os
also written: os, ole, dew
Meaning

Dew.

Literally: dew

Usage & notes

Os is dew in the Hindavi register — the night-gathered bead of water on grass and petal, gone by morning, twin to the Persian shabnam and emblem of tenderness, of tears, and of beauty's brevity. It is the most transient of the garden's adornments. Iqbal's dew-imagery sets such perishing drops against the self-keeping drop he prizes: the dewdrop that evaporates contrasts with the soul that refuses to vanish in the sun.
