Persian · noun · Iqbal's Emblems

Parwana

परवाना
said par-waa-na
Meaning

The moth that circles a flame and burns itself in the fire it loves.

Usage & notes

The parwana is the supreme emblem of the self-consuming lover who annihilates himself in the beloved's flame, the figure of love that finds fulfilment in being burned. Iqbal honours this surrender even as his philosophy of the Self complicates the moth's eager self-destruction.
