Literally: trodden path; established practice
The example and practice of the Prophet Muhammad — his words, deeds and approvals — which, with the Quran, forms the model for Muslim life. Iqbal venerates the Prophet's example as the living pattern of a complete human being and a transformed society, and reads the sunnat as a dynamic source of guidance and law rather than a merely external code to be imitated lifelessly.
Hadees
A recorded saying, action, or approval of the Prophet Muhammad, a primary source of Islamic guidance.
Sunna
The established practice of the Prophet forming a source of law alongside the Quran.
Farz
A religious duty that is obligatory upon every Muslim, such as the five daily prayers.
Shariat
Islamic religious law derived from the Quran and the practice of the Prophet.
