Persian · noun · The Heart & the Body

Tapish

तपिश
said ta-pish
also written: tapish-e, tapan
Meaning

Burning agitation and palpitation, the throbbing heat of a heart inflamed with restless longing.

Literally: burning, restlessness, throbbing heat

Usage & notes

Tapish is the burning restlessness of the lover's heart — the fevered throbbing, the inability to be still, that longing breeds. It is desire felt as heat and motion, the opposite of peace. The ghazal honors this unrest as the sign of a living love; for Iqbal especially, the restless, throbbing heart is far nobler than the placid one — tapish is the inner fire that refuses contentment and keeps the self striving.
