Aandhi

आँधी
said AAN-dhee
also written: andhi, storm, gale, Andhi
Meaning

A storm, gale, or dust-storm.

Literally: storm, dust-storm, gale

Usage & notes

The aandhi is the storm or violent dust-gale — the wind that uproots, darkens the sky and sweeps the old order away, an image of upheaval, trial and overwhelming force. Against the gentle garden breeze it is wind turned to power. Iqbal often prefers exactly this: he calls for the storm over the still air, urging the eagle-soul and the awakened nation to be the gale that scatters the stale and tests the strong, the tempest that makes the weak nest fall and the rooted stand.
