Meaning

The lover; one consumed by passionate love (ishq).

Literally: One who loves passionately.

How Iqbal uses it

Aashiq is the lover, the active pole opposite the maashooq. For Iqbal the true aashiq is the self ablaze with ishq — a heroic, self-creating figure, not merely a sighing suitor.
