Literally: Adam; man; mankind
Adam is Adam, the first man, and by extension mankind. Iqbal returns often to the Quranic drama of Adam, taught the names, made vicegerent, even greater than the angels in his trust, to ground his high vision of human dignity and creative responsibility. The fall and exile of Adam become, in his reading, the beginning of man's heroic striving on earth.
Khalifa
A successor or vicegerent; the head of the Muslim community after the Prophet, and the human as God's steward on earth.
Amanat
The divine trust; the burden of moral responsibility that humanity alone accepted from God.
Insaan
A human being; man as a moral and spiritual creature.
Bani-Aadam
Humankind; the children of Adam, the whole human family.
Iblis
The fallen angel who refused to bow to Adam; the archetype of proud rebellion against God.
