Baqa
Abiding, subsistence in God; the state of renewed being that follows fana in Sufi thought.
Literally: subsistence; abiding; permanence
The Sufi station of "abiding" that follows fana — the self subsisting in and through God after the passing away of its lower attributes (baqa bi'llah). Iqbal leans on this stage to make his case against pure self-annihilation: what matters is the abiding, fortified individuality that endures and acts. Immortality, for him, is not automatic but is won by the self that has become strong enough to persist.
Fana
Annihilation, passing away; the mystic's extinction of the self in the Beloved, the goal of the Sufi path.
Fana-Fillah
Annihilation of the self in God, the highest stage of self-effacement in Sufi doctrine.
Khudi
Selfhood; the self, the ego — in the philosophical, not the vain, sense.
