Darvesh
दरवेश
said dar-vesh
also written: Darvish, Dervish
Meaning
A wandering mendicant mystic who renounces worldly wealth; a poor man of God.
Literally: poor one, mendicant
How Iqbal uses it
The darvesh's voluntary poverty becomes, for Iqbal, a sign of inner kingship and freedom from the world's chains. He celebrates a darveshi that is rich in spirit and unbowed before the powerful, not mere beggary.
