said fir-AUN

Meaning

Pharaoh; the Egyptian king who oppressed the Israelites, the Quranic archetype of tyranny and self-deification.

Usage & notes

Firaun is Iqbal's standing symbol of tyranny and the arrogant power that sets itself up as god, destined to drown before the staff of Moses. He uses Pharaoh to indict every oppressor who mistakes worldly might for divinity.
