Arabic · noun · Love & Longing
Hasrat
हसरत
said HAS-rat
also written: hasrat-e, hasratein
Meaning
Unfulfilled longing, wistful regret for what is desired but denied.
Literally: unfulfilled longing, vain wish, regret
Usage & notes
Hasrat is longing that was never fulfilled — the ache of a wish that died unmet, desire mixed with the grief of its own impossibility. It is the sigh over what one yearned for and could not have, carried even to the grave. The ghazal is full of hasratein, the lover's collection of beautiful unanswered wants; the word holds both the sweetness of having desired and the sorrow of having missed.
