Persian · noun · Mind & Knowledge

Hosh

होश
said HOSH
also written: hosh, hosch
Meaning

Senses, consciousness, awareness; the possession of one's wits.

Literally: awareness, presence of mind, sober consciousness

How Iqbal uses it

Hosh is wakeful awareness — the clear-eyed presence of mind that keeps a person alert to their condition and purpose. In Iqbal's thought, self-knowledge and self-awareness are central to khudi, so wakefulness is prized over the sleep of heedlessness. He often summons the heedless to come to their senses, treating spiritual and political slumber as the enemy of an awakened self.
