Arabic · noun · Character & Virtue

Ikhlas

इख़्लास
said ikh-LAAS
also written: ikhlas, ikhlaas, sincerity
Meaning

Sincerity; the purification of intention so that worship is for God alone.

Literally: sincerity; purity of intention

Usage & notes

Sincerity — the purification of intention so that one's worship and deeds are for God alone, untainted by show or self-seeking; it names a whole Quranic chapter affirming God's pure oneness. Iqbal treats sincerity as the inner condition that makes action truly religious: a deed counts before God by the purity of the self behind it, not by its outward display.
