Intention — the inner purpose behind an act, which in Islamic ethics determines its worth ("deeds are but by intentions"). It is the hinge of sincerity. Consistent with his emphasis on the inner self as the source of all genuine action, Iqbal locates the religious value of conduct in the will and intention that animate it, not in mere external form.
