Khum
A large wine-vat or jar in which wine is aged; emblem of the source of endless intoxication.
Literally: the great wine-vat; cask
The khum is the vast vat in which wine is fermented and stored — the deepest source behind jar and cup, and so the very wellspring of divine grace in the tavern of love. To draw from the khum is to drink from the origin, not the dregs. The image insists that the supply of love is oceanic; the seeker's only task is to bring a vessel.
Subu
An earthen wine-jar or pitcher; the vessel from which the cup is filled.
Maikhaana
A tavern, the wine-house; the mystic gathering-place opposed to the mosque's austerity.
Khumkhaana
A wine-cellar or tavern where the vats are kept; a poetic name for the house of mystical wine.
Sabu
An earthen wine-jar or pitcher; a common image in Persian and Urdu poetry.
