Arabic · noun · Love & Longing

Mahroomi

महरूमी
said mah-ROO-mee
also written: Mahrumi, mahrumi, mehroomi
Meaning

Deprivation; being denied the beloved or the boon of union.

Literally: state of being deprived/forbidden

Usage & notes

Mahroomi is deprivation — the lover's lot of being denied the beloved, shut out from the grace others seem to receive. It names not a single refusal but a settled condition of going without. The ghazal wears this denial almost as a badge: the truest lover is often the most deprived, loving on with nothing in hand, and in the spiritual reading, the seeker who feels most barred is sometimes nearest the door.
