Persian · noun · Nature & the Garden
Maidan
मैदान
said mai-DAAN
also written: maydan, maidaan, Maidan-e-Jung, Maidaan
Meaning
An open field, plain or arena; a battlefield.
Literally: field; arena; battlefield
Usage & notes
Maidan is an open field or arena, and maidan-e-jung the field of battle. Iqbal uses it as the arena of struggle and trial where the self is tested and proved, whether in war, in life, or in the contest with one's own weakness. To shun the maidan, for him, is to forfeit the chance to grow.
