Matla

मतला
Meaning

The opening couplet of a ghazal or ode, in which both lines rhyme.

Literally: place of rising (of a star)

Usage & notes

The matla 'rises' like a dawn over the poem, setting its rhyme and mood; Iqbal used the opening couplet to stake the theme at once. A strong matla announced the whole flight to come.
