Persian · noun · Being & Non-Being

Neesti

नीस्ती
said nees-tee
also written: Nisti
Meaning

Non-existence, nothingness, annihilation of being.

Literally: is-not-ness

Usage & notes

Neesti is the Persian counterpart of adam, the nothingness opposed to hasti. Where classical Sufism courted neesti as the goal of fana, Iqbal recoils, holding that the self's task is to be more, not to vanish.
