Shi'r

शेर
also written: Sher
Meaning

A couplet; a single unit of verse made of two hemistichs.

How Iqbal uses it

The shi'r is Iqbal's basic vessel of thought, in which he compressed philosophy and fire into two lines. He prized the couplet that struck like a spark rather than one that merely pleased the ear.
