Uns is intimacy — the easeful familiarity of two who are close, the comfort of a presence that has become like one's own. Softer than passion, it names the warmth of belonging, the at-homeness one feels with the beloved. In Sufi usage uns is a station of the heart's intimacy with the Divine — the sweet familiarity of the soul with God, set opposite the awe (haibat) of distance.
