Wada

A promise or tryst; the beloved's pledge to meet or to favour.

Literally: a promise (of meeting/union)

Wada is the beloved's promise — the vowed meeting, the pledged tomorrow on which the lover stakes his hope. The ghazal is full of the anxiety around it: the wada made and broken, the appointed night that never comes, the promise (wada-e-farda) endlessly deferred. To live on a beloved's promise is the lover's sweet torment, hope held out and rarely kept, faith sustained against all the evidence.
