Yaar is the beloved-as-friend — the intimate one, dear companion and lover at once, the word that carries warmth and familiarity rather than distance. It can mean a comrade or the cherished darling; in Sufi usage the Yaar is the Divine Friend, the companion of the heart closer than one's own breath. Its tenderness is its whole charge: the beloved named not as a remote idol but as the one who is truly with you.
