The verse in Devanagari — it carries the authenticity of the original, and every Hindi reader can read it.

The Interpretation

A professor's joke with a real observation folded inside it. The model student — all method, all good marks — is exactly the one least prepared for love, which rewards none of the things that earn a high grade. It lands because it is self-aware: the man saying it teaches for a living, and knows the virtues of the classroom do not survive contact with the heart.

For You, Today

The discipline that wins you marks — caution, method, doing precisely what is asked — is not the discipline that helps you love. Being good at the syllabus does not make you good at the things that were never on it.

The couplet the compère singled out as unmistakably Balwant Singh's: 'only he could say this,' he told the hall, 'because he has experience of both love and of teaching.' Transcribed from his mushaira recitation, as his verse is held in no published archive.
