The torn collar is the old emblem of the lover driven past composure, and the couplet refuses to explain it — saying instead that understanding will arrive only by being lived. It is both an invitation and a warning: come as far as I have, and the meaning will find you, because some knowledge cannot be handed over, only earned.
Some lessons cannot be taught to you in advance — you will understand them only once you have walked far enough to need them.
