How Iqbal uses it

Aarzu-e-visaal is the desire for union — the longing not yet for the beloved's face alone but for the consummation of being wholly one with it. It names the deepest pull of the whole quest, the want behind all the smaller wants. In the mystical reading it is the soul's homesickness for union with the Divine, the desire that, paradoxically, may be more precious than its own fulfillment.
