Firaaq is the state of being severed from the beloved — close kin to hijr, with a graver, more absolute weight, as of a parting that may not mend. It names the wound around which the lover organizes a whole life of waiting. Poets dignify it as the soil in which longing grows; the pain of firaaq is the proof that love is real.
