Union, the coming-together of lover and beloved; the longed-for meeting.
Literally: union, joining
Wasl is the moment of joining — the consummation of all the waiting, the night the lover and beloved are finally one. The ghazal pairs it eternally with hijr: each defines the other, and the sweetness of wasl is measured by the length of the separation it ends. Mystically, wasl is union with the Real, the homecoming of the drop into the sea — though poets often confess they fear it might dissolve the very self that loved.
