Hijaaz
हिजाज़
said hi-JAAZ
also written: Hijaz, Hejaz
Meaning
The western region of Arabia containing Mecca and Medina, the cradle of Islam.
How Iqbal uses it
Iqbal turns his gaze to the Hijaz as the homeland of faith and the source of Islam's original energy, titling a late collection Armaghan-e-Hijaz, the Gift of the Hijaz. The desert of the Hijaz becomes for him the wellspring of spiritual renewal.
