Stations, stages, or spiritual standings (plural of maqam).

Literally: Plural of maqam, a standing-place.

How Iqbal uses it

The plural carries the Sufi sense of graded stations on the path; in 'Sitaron se aage' the maqamat of sighing and lament are presented as further stages the wayfarer can still attain.
