Meaning
Stations, stages, or spiritual standings (plural of maqam).
Literally: Plural of maqam, a standing-place.
How Iqbal uses it
The plural carries the Sufi sense of graded stations on the path; in 'Sitaron se aage' the maqamat of sighing and lament are presented as further stages the wayfarer can still attain.
See it in the verse
Maqamat in Iqbal’s couplets
Agar kho gaya ek nasheman to kya gham
Maqamat-e-aah-o-fughan aur bhi hain
Maqamat-e-aah-o-fughan aur bhi hain
If one nest is lost, why grieve? There are other stations of sighs and laments still ahead.
Restlessness · Hope · Adversity
