Tariqat
The mystical path or Sufi order; the inward way toward God, contrasted with the outward law.
Literally: the way; the path
The inner spiritual path of the Sufi orders — the disciplined method of purifying the heart that lies between the outward shariat and the inmost haqiqat. Iqbal honours the tariqat as the dimension of inwardness and love, but insists it remain rooted in the shariat and oriented toward life, rather than becoming the escapist, world-renouncing mysticism he criticized.
Shariat
Islamic religious law derived from the Quran and the practice of the Prophet.
Haqeeqat
Reality; the Truth, the ultimate essence (the opposite of majaz).
Marifat
Experiential gnosis; the intimate, direct knowledge of God attained by the mystic's heart.
Suluk
The disciplined journey of the seeker along the Sufi path toward God, traversing its stations and states.
