Persian · noun · Love & Longing
Paiman
पैमान
said pai-MAAN
also written: Paimaan, paimaan, paiman, peyman
Meaning
A pledge, covenant, solemn promise between lovers.
Literally: pact, solemn agreement, troth
Usage & notes
Paimaan is a binding pact, the troth pledged between parties or between the soul and its Lord. Iqbal joins it to wafa: a pact is honoured only by those with the constancy to keep it when keeping costs something. He uses the breaking of paimaan as an image of moral failure, and its faithful keeping as the seal of an integrated, trustworthy self.
