Usage & notes

Raqeeb is the rival — the hated competitor who also seeks the beloved, the figure who haunts the jealous lover's nights. The ghazal builds a whole social world around him: the raqeeb who sits beside the beloved, who is favored while the true lover is spurned. He embodies the lover's deepest fear — that the beloved's grace might fall on another — and sharpens love into something fierce and possessive.
