Arabic · noun · Love & Longing

Taghaful

तग़ाफ़ुल
also written: Taghaaful
Meaning

Deliberate inattention or feigned negligence by the beloved, who pretends not to notice the lover.

Literally: heedlessness, willful neglect

Usage & notes

A prized coquetry of the beloved in the ghazal: the studied indifference that wounds yet enchants. Iqbal redirects the motif toward the divine and toward a slumbering ummah whose taghaful is its tragedy.
