Tahammul
तहम्मुल
said ta-HAM-mul
also written: tahammul, tahammal, tehammul
Meaning
Forbearance, endurance, the capacity to bear patiently.
Literally: endurance, the capacity to bear
Usage & notes
Tahammul is the capacity to bear — the strength to carry hardship and weight without breaking. Iqbal pairs endurance with active striving: the self that would achieve must be able to suffer and persist, holding firm through trial. He distinguishes this load-bearing fortitude, which serves a forward-driving will, from the mere passivity that bears because it has surrendered the hope of change.
