Islamic mysticism — the science and practice of purifying the heart and drawing near to God. Iqbal valued the inner, experiential core of tasawwuf as a genuine path to knowledge of God, but distinguished its living spirit from the ossified institutions and pantheistic, world-renouncing tendencies he believed had sapped Muslim vitality. His ideal preserves tasawwuf's love and depth while restoring its energy for action.
Sufi
A Muslim mystic who seeks direct experience of the Divine through purification of the heart and love of God.
Tariqat
The mystical path or Sufi order; the inward way toward God, contrasted with the outward law.
Marifat
Experiential gnosis; the intimate, direct knowledge of God attained by the mystic's heart.
Ishq
Love — passionate, all-consuming love, whether for the divine or the human.
Suluk
The disciplined journey of the seeker along the Sufi path toward God, traversing its stations and states.
