Ecstasy — the rapture or overpowering state that seizes the Sufi in the throes of love and remembrance, often during sama. It is a species of haal, a fleeting gift rather than an earned station. Iqbal acknowledges such ecstatic states but consistently values the durable transformation of the self over the transient swoon, wary of a mysticism that prizes rapture for its own sake.
