Haal
A transient spiritual state granted to the seeker by grace, as opposed to a permanently earned station.
Literally: state; condition
In Sufi technical language, a transient spiritual "state" that descends on the seeker as a gift — a passing condition of expansion, awe or ecstasy — as distinct from a maqam, a permanently earned station. Iqbal works within this vocabulary while characteristically valuing the durable, won transformation of the self over the fleeting rapture of the moment.

A station, halting-place, or place of stay; a position or rank.
Maqaam
A spiritual station or stage attained by the seeker on the Sufi path through effort.
Suluk
The disciplined journey of the seeker along the Sufi path toward God, traversing its stations and states.

Ecstasy; the rapture that overtakes the Sufi when the Divine touches the heart, often in sama.
