Persian · noun · Faith & Sacred History

Dair

दैर
said DAIR
also written: Deir
Meaning

A cloister, temple, or place of non-Muslim worship; in poetry, the abode of the wine-server and the unbeliever.

Usage & notes

Following the classical pairing, Iqbal sets the dair against the haram, the temple against the mosque, sometimes to dissolve the opposition in the unity of God. The dair becomes the foil that throws the sanctuary's meaning into relief.
