Pir-e-mughaan
The 'Elder of the Magians', the old Zoroastrian wine-seller and master of the tavern; in Sufi symbolism the true spiritual guide who dispenses the wine of love.
Literally: elder of the Magians
The Magian elder, keeper of the tavern's wine, stands in the mystic idiom for the authentic guide set against the orthodox cleric. Iqbal invokes him as the dispenser of a living wisdom that the dry pulpit cannot give.
Mughbachcha
A young Magian; the youthful attendant or cup-bearer of the fire-temple turned tavern, who serves the wine of love.
Saaqi
The cup-bearer who pours the wine; in Sufi verse, the beloved, the spiritual guide, or God as the giver of the wine of love.
Kharaabaat
The tavern or wine-quarter, literally 'the ruins'; in Sufi poetry the place of self-annihilation where the wine of divine love is served.
Murshid
A spiritual guide or preceptor who directs the disciple toward God.
