Arabic · noun · Character & Virtue

Istiqlaal

इस्तिक़लाल
said is-tiq-LAAL
also written: istiqlal, istiqlaal, isteqlal
Meaning

Steadfastness, firmness, resolute constancy; also independence.

Literally: independence, self-standing autonomy

Usage & notes

Istiqlal is standing on one's own — independence of self, will, and judgement. Iqbal makes autonomy intrinsic to khudi: the free self thinks and acts from its own centre rather than leaning on others or borrowing its convictions. He treats dependence and imitation as forms of inner servitude, and self-reliant independence as the political and spiritual fruit of an awakened self.
