Mujahida
The inner spiritual struggle against the carnal self, the greater jihad of self-discipline.
Literally: striving; struggle against the self
Spiritual striving — the disciplined struggle (mujahida) against the lower self and its appetites, the inner counterpart of outward jihad, often called the "greater jihad." Iqbal's ethic of effort and self-conquest resonates strongly here: the strengthening of khudi requires precisely this strenuous discipline of the self, though he insists the conquered self then turn outward to act creatively in the world.
Riyazat
Spiritual austerity and disciplined exercise undertaken to train and purify the lower self.
Nafs-e-Ammara
The commanding lower self that incites a person toward evil and base desire.
Nafs
The lower self or ego-soul, seat of base appetites, which the seeker must discipline and refine.
Jihad
Struggle or striving, especially in the way of God; effort against evil, within or without.
Suluk
The disciplined journey of the seeker along the Sufi path toward God, traversing its stations and states.
Khudi
Selfhood; the self, the ego — in the philosophical, not the vain, sense.
