Arabic · noun · Poetry, Speech & Art

Shaa'ir

शाइर
also written: Shair
Meaning

A poet; one who perceives and composes verse.

Literally: one who perceives / is keenly aware

Usage & notes

Iqbal held the shaa'ir to a prophetic standard: a poet who only mourns or beguiles betrays his gift, while the true poet sees ahead and rouses the community. Perception, not mere rhyming, defines him.
