How Iqbal uses it
Sham is the evening, the dusk when day declines into night — classically the hour of gathering melancholy, of separation and the lengthening of the lover's grief, the 'sham-e-firaq,' the evening of parting. It is the descent toward darkness and longing. Iqbal uses dusk for the mood of decline and waiting, the falling of light that makes the coming of dawn so charged; the long sham of a people preceding their promised subah.
