Arabic · noun · Character & Virtue

Tawakkul

तवक्कुल
said ta-WAK-kul
also written: tawakkul, tawakkal, tawakkul-alallah
Meaning

Complete trust in and reliance upon God; the surrender of all outcomes to the divine will.

Literally: trust; reliance upon God

Usage & notes

Reliance on God — entrusting the outcome of one's affairs to Him after doing one's part. Iqbal insists, as the Prophetic teaching does ("tie your camel, then trust in God"), that tawakkul is not fatalistic passivity: the believer exerts every effort and only then leaves the result to God. Misread as inertia, it becomes the disease he attacks; rightly understood, it frees bold action.
