Arabic · noun · Being & Non-Being

Wahdat-ush-Shuhood

वहदत-उश-शुहूद
said vah-dat-ush-shu-hood
also written: Wahdat-ul-Shuhud
Meaning

The doctrine of the Unity of Witnessing, that the unity perceived is one of consciousness, not of being, leaving God and creation distinct.

Literally: oneness of witnessing

Usage & notes

Wahdat-ush-shuhud, the Unity of Witnessing championed by Sirhindi against Ibn Arabi's monism, holds that the oneness experienced is in perception, not in being. Iqbal's preference for a real distinction between God and self stands far closer to this position than to wahdat-ul-wujud.
