Umair Najmi
A leading Urdu poet of the new generation — trained as an architect — whose ghazals are admired for their emotional clarity, simplicity and unusual play with the refrain.
Umair Najmi was born on 2 September 1986 in Rahim Yar Khan, in the Punjab of Pakistan, and trained as an architect before becoming one of the most-followed young ghazal poets writing today. He began publishing around 2014, and the major archives now catalogue dozens of his ghazals — a remarkable footprint for a contemporary.
His appeal is the clarity of him: emotional depth carried in deliberately simple language, with a fondness for the inventive radif that has made him especially popular with younger readers who came to the ghazal through the screen rather than the mushaira tent.
