Ghairat is the burning sense of honour that cannot bear humiliation or the violation of what one holds sacred. For Iqbal it is a vital sign of a living self: the man of ghairat would sooner break than bow, and a community that loses this fire has already surrendered its freedom. He repeatedly contrasts the self-respecting heat of ghairat with the cold compliance of the enslaved, treating its loss as the inward cause of political subjugation.
